A Landmark for Culture and the Waterfront

BOLD. INNOVATIVE. OPEN TO ALL.

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has won the international competition to design the new Hamburg State Opera and Ballet on the Baakenhöft peninsula in HafenCity, replacing the mid-20th-century building on Dammtorstraße. This contemporary project will create a 45,000-square-meter cultural landmark that merges production, rehearsal, and performance facilities with a public park extending to the river’s edge. The design is envisioned as a living urban island with terraced green roofs, providing a seamless connection between the city, harbor, and art. BIG’s proposal was unanimously praised for its masterful integration of a major cultural hub within HafenCity’s fluid urban landscape, transforming the opera into a vibrant social and ecological space. At its core, the opera house features a main auditorium wrapped in sculpted wooden layers designed for perfect acoustics and sightlines, dissolving the traditional divide between audience and performers. The building’s continuous circular rooftop forms a walkable landscape of gardens and terraces, inviting public access from all sides and offering panoramic views of Hamburg’s skyline and the Elbe river. Transparent facades showcase the operational areas, creating openness and connection with the community. Beside supporting the city’s cultural life, the design incorporates sustainable elements like rainwater management and native vegetation, ensuring resilience to the Elbe’s tides and a harmonious interplay between architecture and nature. This innovative opera house redefines public space and cultural engagement in Hamburg.

Design Highlights: Showcasing Architectural Innovations

* Terraced Topography: The opera rises as concentric platforms—like soundwaves in stone—framing the harbor and creating multi-level gardens, walkways, and gathering spaces. It’s a giant amphitheater with nature on its roof.

* See Inside, Stay Outside: Transparent facades, open foyers, and cascading timber staircases invite you to explore, peek at rehearsals, or enjoy a sunset over the Elbe.

* Heart of the Building: The main auditorium is wrapped in sculpted wood—superb acoustics and perfect sightlines for every guest, dissolving borders between artist and audience.

Why Is This Different?

Access for All: The new Hamburg State Opera by BIG offers unprecedented accessibility and inclusivity with its design inviting visitors to walk freely on its roof, mingle on open terraces, and experience the city and harbor from fresh perspectives. Unlike traditional buildings, it has no rear elevation; public space envelops the opera on every side, turning it into a truly permeable and welcoming cultural hub. Visitors can approach the opera from multiple paths—the waterfront park, pier, or adjacent streets—with stone pavements flowing seamlessly from the exterior landscape into the vibrant foyer. This connectivity creates a fluid transition between the city and the arts, making the opera a living part of Hamburg’s urban fabric.

Sustainability Front and Center: Sustainability is deeply embedded within the project’s DNA. The opera features extensive green roofs, wetland gardens, and rainwater management systems designed to thrive alongside the Elbe’s tidal fluctuations. These ecological components not only handle stormwater and prevent flooding but also foster urban biodiversity by creating habitats for native plants and animals. Planted dunes and permeable terraces function as natural sponges, absorbing and filtering water while enhancing the site’s resilience. Together, these sustainable features form a dynamic landscape infrastructure that reconnects the building to its environment, ensuring that the new opera house will be a model of environmental harmony as well as cultural excellence.
